The Three-Click Rule in Web Design

Most visitors lose patience if three clicks don't get them what they came for. Make sure no key information on your website sits any deeper than that.

In web design, there's one rule everyone has to follow. If your web design provider ignores it, you can count on losing customers fast. It's the three-click rule. The idea is that the average person loses patience after clicking three times on your website without finding the information they came for. It sounds simple. But if key information, such as how to buy something on your site, takes more than three clicks to reach, you can be sure plenty of customers will visit your website and leave without making a purchase.

To avoid that, write a few scenarios during the web design process that show how customers can get to important information in three clicks or fewer. No key information should take more than three clicks to find. Then test your draft website by giving those scenarios to a few people while the design is still in progress.
